Seat Tarraco PHEV: Plug-in hybrid details
This car is not a big surprise, but an important one. When the Tarraco was introduced, Seat already declared: In 2020, it will come as a plug-in hybrid. The brand is keeping its word and exhibiting the partially electric variant at the IAA. The SUV borrows the drive technology from its sister brand VW and is expected to drive more than 50 kilometers purely electrically.
If you take it very seriously, there is only one study parked at the Frankfurt trade fair. The car is not yet homologated, all data are only preliminary and are subject to change. The finished production version will start next year. It will differ from the showpiece at most in details.
The Tarraco PHEV debuts with FR package
In general, not much changes in the large SUV. The flap for the charging port is located in the left fender – a small special feature, because the modular system actually requires a connection behind the manufacturer's logo in the front of the vehicle. The rear gets new lettering with italics. That's it in terms of visual independence.
The study debuts in the "FR" trim level – at Seat the sporty design line. It includes snappy aprons, large wheels, a small roof spoiler and a special radiator grille. Inside, Seat installs electric sports seats, a sports steering wheel and pedal pads made of aluminum.
The design package will be available independently of the plug-in strand. For the time being, it helps the part-time electric car with its positioning: It will be the most powerful version of the Tarraco, so it can appear with broad shoulders. Seat announces a system output of 245 hp. A lead of 55 hp over the next weaker model.
With two motors and the highest performance
The total output is as follows: A 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 150 hp is supported by an electric motor with 85 kW of power. However, both deliver their respective maximum power at different speeds. The system therefore does not produce a total of 265 hp, but only 245 hp.
Curiously, even this number seems relatively high. The VW Passat only achieves a system output of 218 hp with basically identical technology, but a more powerful petrol engine (156 hp). The system torque of 400 Newton meters, on the other hand, seems realistic.
The combustion engine and electric motor work together or separately from each other. They send their power exclusively to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Seat announces that the Tarraco PHEV sprints to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 217 km/h.
In the WLTP test cycle, the plug-in hybrid is expected to achieve CO2 emissions of less than 50 grams per kilometre. This corresponds to a fuel consumption of around two liters per 100 kilometers. The Tarraco's battery stores 13 kWh of electricity, enough for a purely electric range of more than 50 kilometres.
Market launch: 2020
The euphoria at Seat is great. A total of six partially or fully electric models are to be launched by 2021. The Tarraco is one of them. However, it will be a few months before it comes onto the market. "In the course of 2020" it should be at the dealerships. A wide window of opportunity.
Maybe Seat just wants to keep all options open. The Ateca and Leon are also to be electrified, and purely electric models based on the electric toolkit are also planned. The order is probably still being defined.
When the Tarraco launches as a plug-in hybrid, it will probably be the most expensive variant of the model. We expect a base price of around 47,000 euros. This would make it slightly more expensive than the VW Passat with the comparable drive, but larger and more practical.
