To help members find the best car replacement battery, Consumer Reports tests more than 100 individual car batteries in our lab each year to help you make a smart decision about when it's time to replace your battery. We test five units of each assessed model to ensure that your experience is consistent with our results. After all, car batteries are essential for every commute, errand, and road trip. It can be easy to take it for granted that your car will start every time, but the batteries run out – and not always at an opportune time.

The tests are inherently tough. We charge and discharge the batteries thousands of times in a 167°C water bath to simulate the temperatures under the hood and find out how long they last. We also put them in a freezer to see how they perform at 0°F, and we track how long they last if you leave your car's headlights on or the charging system fails.

There are many factors that affect battery life, with the weather being one of the most important. (While batteries typically fail in cold temperatures, it's the hot temperatures that cause the deterioration.) This is where our extreme tests can distinguish the promising batteries from those that come up short.

Many of the top-rated batteries are expensive AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries. They are known to have a long lifespan and can tolerate deep discharges – if the battery has been discharged to 10.5 volts or less, such as if the lights are left on overnight. But some of the top-rated lead-acid batteries cost less than many of their competitors, says Frank Spinelli, who oversees car battery testing at Consumer Reports.

"The price does not necessarily mean better performance," says Spinelli. "We have some cheaper batteries in our reviews that score very well."

Before you buy a new car battery, you should know the correct group number for your vehicle, which varies depending on the make, model, year, and engine size.

Batteries are defined by the physical size, type, and placement of connectors, as well as how they are mounted. Make sure to replace your battery with a battery from the same group so that it fits in the compartment and the cables connect properly.
